December 2015 Lake Lanier Fishing Report

Happy Holidays!  Lake Lanier is low (currently over 14 1/2 feet down) but still accessible and the fishing keeps getting better.  Water temps are in the mid 50’s and that has the bait moving to the backs of the main creeks.  The stripers are on the move as well.  Depending on conditions they might be right up on the banks or in 60-70′ of water over the creek channels.  The key to finding fish right now is good electronics and there is none better than Lowrance’s HDS.  The down and side scan options are invaluable in finding the deep bait that the stripers are working.  Also look for the birds that are eating bait fish as the game fish push them to the surface.

Free lines and planer boards have been best at the beginning of the day, with downlines the better bet as the day progresses.  I have also been catching a lot of spotted bass with a jigging spoon that I have been working with Captain Mack Farr to produce.  They are available at Oakwood Bait & Tackle and Hammond’s Fishing Center right now and are also available online at http://www.captmacks.com/.  Make sure that you keep a Capt. Mack’s 1/2 oz bucktail tied on to cast to any surfacing fish that come in range.  We will soon be coming out with a pro line of jigs that feature a skirt body that has unreal action.  It will be paired with 2 different head styles and will range from 1/2 oz to 2 oz sizes in 5 different colors.  This spring we will also have some larger sizes to target snapper and grouper.
