Kid Catches Great Lake Lanier Striped Bass

March 2026 Lake Lanier Striper Fishing Report

Quick Lake Report – March 2026

Lake level: 1066.02 (4.98 feet below full pool)
Water temps: 51-55°F
Water clarity: stained in river systems and backs of major creeks; clear on the main lake

March is a true transition month on Lake Lanier. Early in the month, much of the bite still looks like winter. As water temperatures rise, fish begin to slide shallower, spreads open up, and the planer board bite takes over—sometimes even leading to early topwater opportunities late in the month.

Where the Fish Are

Fish locations will shift throughout March depending on rain, runoff, and water temperature.

Early March Pattern

  • Fish holding halfway back in creeks out toward river channels
  • Strong concentrations in:
    • Northern creeks on the Chattahoochee arm
    • Mid-lake creeks on the Chestatee arm

Late March Pattern

As water warms and clarity improves, expect fish to move shallower and spread out into both north and south lake creeks, including:

South End

  • Flat Creek
  • Four Mile
  • Six Mile
  • Bald Ridge

North End

  • Thompson
  • Taylor
  • Latham
  • Gainesville
  • Wahoo
  • Limestone

Depth & Seasonal Movement

  • Early month: fish primarily in 35–90 feet of water
  • Late month: shallow fish feeding over points, humps, and flats in 15–30 feet

Rainfall plays a big role this month:

  • Heavy runoff / cold muddy water will push river fish south
  • Lighter rainfall allows fish to move up river systems earlier as they stage for the spawn

What’s Working Best (March Bite)

1) Downlines (Early Month Pattern)

Early March still favors a downline bite for deeper fish.

  • Depth: 35–90 feet
  • Location: halfway back in creeks out toward channels
  • Baits:
    • Blueback herring
    • Large shiners
    • Small trout
    • Threadfin shad

This pattern is strongest in northern creeks early and will fade as water temperatures climb.

2) Flat Lines & Perfect Planer Boards (Mid–Late March)

As water warms, this becomes the dominant pattern.

  • Depth: 15–30 feet
  • Speed: .8–1.1 mph
  • Where: points and humps as fish slide shallow
  • Baits:
    • Herring
    • Threadfin shad
    • Small to medium trout

Spread setup

  • Flat lines: 50–100 feet behind the boat with smaller baits
  • Planer boards:
    • 15–30 feet back with larger baits
    • Smaller baits pulled farther back

3) Swimbaits in the Spread (Must-Have in March)

Make sure you run at least one multi bait setup this month.

  • Rig: Capt Mack’s Mini Mack
  • Heads: larger Striper Tackle swimbait heads
  • Why: This setup was catching fish 2-to-1 over live bait in February and continues producing into March

This is an excellent option for covering water and triggering reaction bites as fish transition.

March is all about paying attention to change. Water temperature, clarity, and runoff can shift the bite fast. If something isn’t working, don’t force it—adjust your depth, speed, or spread and let the fish tell you what they want that day.

Stay flexible, keep a mixed spread out, and don’t be afraid to move until you find active fish.

Captain’s Note

Matthew 28:19-20.Matthew 28:19 ESV

“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Who is a disciple? It is someone who not only follows his/her teacher but strives to live their lives as their teacher. It means being like, copying ever move, even thinking like your teacher. A disciple is someone learning to be Jesus. “Go and make disciples of all men….” is our commission and translates better, as you go along your way make disciples and teach them the good news (The Gospel) which in a nut shell is Jesus led a sinless life, died a sinners death, and rose to new life to destroy the power of sin forever. We are called to have a bold faith and to not be ashamed. He does not wait for us to be qualified but makes us qualified just by calling us. We are only responsible for obedience to this command.  God is responsible for the outcome! Don’t be afraid. Go, baptize, and teach them. He calls all of us to this, not just pastors and missionaries. EVERYONE who is a follower of Christ; his disciples.

Final Word

March gives you some of the most dynamic fishing of the year on Lake Lanier. You can catch them deep on downlines one week and shallow on planer boards the next. Stay observant, cover water, and be ready to adapt.
