October Lake Lanier Fishing Report

October Fishing Report

October is one of our transition months here on Lake Lanier. One day you might have a great top water bite going on all around you and the next it is back to down lines in 100 feet of water.   The fish are on the move and can be found from one end of the lake to the other.

Water temps are in the mid-70s and are dropping. These consistent mid 70 temps will start the lake turn over which will make using all our different techniques possible for the next few weeks. There has been some decent top water activity from Flowery Branch to the dam over the last three weeks which has been a lot of fun. The schools have been coming up for very short periods of time so you have to stay vigilant and watch for any activity and move quickly to get to the school before they go down. These fish are very aggressive and if you get there in time will bite just about any plug that you throw to them. My favorites have been Heddon Zara Spooks and Sebile Magic Swimmers. I have also been throwing a ½ oz. Capt Mack’s Super Jig with a fluke style trailer and letting it sink just a bit before working it back to the boat. The jig has been getting crushed as it falls thru the surfacing fish and having the rod almost ripped out of your hands is almost as fun as watching the surface plugs get knocked out of the water two or three times before the fish finally gets hooked up. Lots of fish have been in deep open water, but there have also been quite a few in 30’ or less on points and humps. These fish have very susceptible to a herring pitched on a medium action spinning rod (rigged with 20# Hi Seas Grand Slam or new Quattro braid), top water baits, or by pulling a Capt Mack’s U-Rig anywhere from 100’ to 130’ behind the boat.

If you are looking for a trophy fish October and November are great months to get up the river and pull big baits. Large trout and gizzard shad are the preferred baits this time of year up either river that form the lake. Put your baits 10 -20 feet behind your North GA Tackle planer boards and pull your baits thru deep holes and down long steep banks. The big fish are working their way up north and this bite will get better as the month progresses.

October is a transition month, but don’t be discouraged it is also a great month to just go fishing.   Capt Mack’s Super Spoon in ½ or ¾ oz Silver or Blue flash will be a great lure to target bass this month over tree tops or in 25-35’ of water on main lake points or humps. The crappie will also start stacking up on docks that have brush piles on them in 15-30’ of water.   Go fishing this month….you will find something biting.
